A WOMAN believed to be suffering from a mental disorder caused heavy traffic at the first Mactan-Mandaue Bridge when she attempted to jump from it yesterday morning.
It took about two hours for personnel of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation to rescue the woman, believed to be in her 20s, who resisted and cursed the rescuers as she stood on a steel beam under the bridge.
Rescuers brought her to the psychiatric ward of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
A motorist noticed the woman attempting suicide around 6 a.m. Traffic got stalled for about two hours as onlookers crowded around the rescuers.
PO1 Adrian Yonting of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) Special Weapons and Tactics said the woman gave incoherent statements to rescuers and responding police officers.
The woman said she lives in Mandaue City.
The suicide attempt came a day after an 18-year-old woman was found hanging inside her room in Barangay Gun-on, Lapu-Lapu City.
The fatality was identified by police as Akiera Mae Patalinghog, a native of Ormoc City, Leyte.
PO2 Jerson Alparito of the LLCPO Homicide Section said Patalinghog’s aunt, 61-year-old Carmelita Tampus, overheard her niece talking with her live-in partner on the phone the night before.
Tampus told police investigators that her niece had a misunderstanding with her live-in partner.
Tampus’s seven-year-old niece found the lifeless Patalinghog in her room around 3 p.m. last Wednesday inside their house at the Sacred Heart Village.
