A PHILIPPINE Air Force reservist was arrested by the City Intelligence Branch (CIB) of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) yesterday morning in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City.
Reservist Sgt. Roger Acojedo has also been tagged by Sandy Kho, a robbery suspect recently arrested by the CIB, as their leader and financier.
Acojedo denied Kho’s allegation. He said he just got back from Tacloban City, after helping some typhoon survivors, and was on his way to clear his name with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
CIB Chief Romeo Santander said they arrested Acojedo for possession of a 9mm pistol and a hand grenade; he added his team was responding to a call about an armed man who had boarded a taxi.
Kho was arrested last week after he was tagged as a suspect in two robberies in Barangay Inayawan, involving P800,000, and a pharmacy in Barangay Talamban early this month. Kho talked about Acojedo to the polic, describing him as the financier who who plans their targets.
Acojedo, however, said he was surprised to see that his office appeared to have been ransacked. He thought it was the PDEA behind it, and was on his way to clear his name when he got arrested.
Police have yet to check if the firearm confiscated from Acojedo is licensed.
Santander said they also coordinated with the Lapu-Lapu City Police, who informed them of Acojedo’s presence. Acojedo reportedly lives in Lapu-Lapu City.
Santander said it was a tanod who informed Lapu-Lapu City POlice Director Rey Lyndon Lawas that an armed person boarded a cab in Barangay Babag, Lapu-lapu City. Lawas then assigned an operative to tail Acojedo.
Acojedo reportedly went to Gaisano Mactan, then boarded another taxi to Cebu City.
Lawas then called Santander and informed his team about Acojedo, who was flagged down by the CIB and Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) operatives in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City.
He did not resist arrest.
Acojedo said that his motorcycle was used in a robbery in Inayawan, but only after it had been stolen last Nov. 22.
Santander said as of yesterday, they were still gathering more information on Acojedo.
“We will file a case, same as the one we filed against Kho, once the evidence is okay,” said Santander.
Kho was charged with robbery and illegal possession of firearms earlier this week. When he was arrested, Kho said that they were targeting to rob a pawnshop and another business establishment in Cebu City.
Santander said the police already alerted the target establishments yesterday and sent police personnel for security. He said their information from Kho coincided with what their intelligence unit had found out.
“His information is reliable,” Santander said.
Kho, who was apprehended last Monday dawn in Lapu-lapu City, was linked to the robbery of a businesswoman in Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City that involved nearly P800,000 in cash. He was also tagged in the Dec. 7 robbery of a pharmacy in Barangay Talamban. He was also allegedly behind the shooting to death of estate broker Edgar Cañete outside a bank last Dec. 2.
During his arrest, a KG 9 pistol and a .45 pistol were recovered from his possession.
