No let-up in hot weather as El Niño strikes country-A A +A
Saturday, December 21, 2013
THE country will experience hot temperature until September due to the “mild” El Niño phenomenon.
Oscar Tabada of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan said yesterday’s temperature was 30 degrees Celsius and it can go as high as 37 by late next year.
Tabada, who was conducting a seminar on weather forecasting at the Sun.Star Cebu office, said they will start issuing advisories in January.
He said the public should prepare for water shortages.
He also cautioned against fire.
Meanwhile, Tabada announced that Pagasa will resurvey all areas around Cebu and other areas in the country to determine if there are highly susceptible to storm surges.
He said that aside from areas mentioned by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7 that are considered to be highly and moderately susceptible to storm surges, he found that Barangay Pasil in Cebu City is also susceptible, based on previous typhoons.
Tabada even urged the Cebu City Government to come up with measures to prevent a strong storm surge from striking coastal barangays, such as putting up wave breakers like the ones installed at the South Road Properties.
