SEVEN local government units (LGUs) were given the 2013 Regional ENR (Environment and Natural Resources) Awards and Recognition for developing and implementing initiatives that preserved environmental quality.
These are the Cebu City Government, Mandaue City Government, Naga City Government, San Francisco Municipal Government and Asturias Municipal Government all in Cebu; Bayawan City Government in Negros Oriental; and Garcia-Hernandez Municipal Government in Bohol.
DENR 7 Regional Executive Director Isabelo Montejo said the awards and recognitions may encourage other LGUs to do their best in developing their localities, but at the same time protect the environment especially that the world is facing the problems of climate change and global warming.
Climate change and global warming are believed to be the cause of super typhoons like Yolanda last Nov. 8 and bigger flash floods in different countries, including the Philippines.
The criteria of the awards included accomplishments or exemplary performance in terms of extraordinary partnership and collaboration on environmental programs, projects, and activities, awards in the national level from competent organizations; and compliance with certain provisions or conditions.
Aside from the LGUs, there were 47 others mostly companies, who were commended for conducting best practices in ensuring the protection, conservation and preservation of the environment while addressing poverty.
Mayor Michael Rama received the plaque of appreciation for the Cebu City Government for taking a lead role in implementing measures to hasten the issuance of land titles at the local level through the DENR-LGU public land title program.
For companies who got awards, some of them installed anti-pollution equipment in their business operation.
