A 17-YEAR-OLD truck checker and his mother were shot dead inside their home in Barangay Lawaan 3, Talisay City around dawn on Christmas Day.
Yesterday, police invited the paternal uncle of victim Christian Cana after they learned that he had threatened to kill the victim’s mother Carlota, 38, months before.
Christian, who resides in Sitio Riverside, was sleeping with his mother around 1:20 a.m. when someone entered their home through a hole under their floor.
SPO1 Mikie Espina, one of the investigators, said the gunman fired at Christian several times, hitting the latter in the stomach, in the arm and in the head.
The gunman then turned his attention to Carlota, who was able to run.
But before she could ask neighbors for help, the gunman shot her in the left arm, with the bullet going through the left portion of her body.
The two were taken to the Talisay City District Hospital, where Carlota was declared dead on arrival.
Christian was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, but he succumbed to his injuries hours later.
Espina said they’re eyeing personal grudge as a motive, even though Christian had no known enemies and had no existing criminal record.
Supt. Resty Santos, Talisay City police chief, said they invited the victim’s uncle, Manuel Cana, for questioning.
Santos told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that Manuel threatened Carlota in the past.
Christian, in his mother’s defense, had his uncle temporarily detained for undisclosed
While checking the crime scene, Santos and his investigators found a hat reportedly left by the gun.
When the hat was shown to witnesses, they confirmed that Manuel has one similar to it.
But Santos said they can’t consider Manuel as a suspect without a witness that can point him at the scene.
Manuel, for his part, said he is willing to undergo a paraffin test to prove his innocence.
