AT LEAST P100,000 worth of properties went up in smoke when a fire hit the stockroom of the Department of Energy (DOE) 7 on Osmeña Blvd., Cebu City last Friday evening.
According to Fire Investigator Daniel Relatado, the DOE 7 is located on the 11th floor of the 20-storey Metrobank Plaza.
Relatado said they learned about a smoke alarm at 11:25 p.m.
Firefighters were able to control the fire inside the storage room and were able to prevent this from spreading to the other areas after 10 minutes.
Relatado said a deeper investigation is still being conducted to find out the cause of the fire. He said he would like to know what was kept inside the room that may have triggered the fire.
The entire building is occupied by different concessionaires, but there were no tenants when the fire broke out.
Cebu City Fire Marshal Rogelio Bongabong reiterated his appeal to the public to be extra cautious to prevent fire.
Bongabong said electrical wirings should be properly installed since electrical misuse is the most common cause of fire.
He added that electrical appliances should be unplugged when not in use.
“Hopefully, the public will be more careful. Presence of mind is needed. Dili dapat mag (We should not be) careless,” he added.
