Cortes orders an investigation-A A +A

MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes ordered Atty. James Abadia, the city administrator, to investigate what happened last Saturday night when the youngest son of Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes and his girlfriend were refused treatment at the Mandaue City District Hospital.
John Venth de los Reyes and Salve Vega were on a motorcycle when its engine suddenly exploded and caught on fire around 10 p.m. in Barangay Subangdaku.
The two of them were immediately taken to the government-run hospital where the medical staff allegedly refused to treat their burns because they hadn’t filed a police report about the incident.
John Venth’s brother, Talisay Administrator John Yre de los Reyes, said a nurse later told him the hospital ran out of burn ointment that was why they couldn’t treat the couple.
Getting to the bottom of things
“I will leave no stone unturned. I ordered Abadia to conduct a thorough investigation as basis for appropriate action and I ask the public not to judge because we have yet to know the circumstances. We will be hearing both sides. Kung unsa ang sayop, usbon (We will right the wrong),” Cortes said.
Mandaue City Information Officer Roger Paler said Cortes will try to talk to his Talisay City counterpart.
Paler said they’ve already identified the medical staff on-duty that night.
He said the investigation will begin after the New Year.
Mayor de los Reyes, for his part, welcomed the development.
He also hoped that the hospital staff will improve their services.
“Maayo unta nga mahigmata sila sa ilang gibuhat. Ila unta itrato ang tanang nilang pasyente nga sama ra sa ilang kapamilya ug dili nila balibaran (I hope this will serve as a lesson to them. They should treat all patients like they’re part of their family and not turn them away),” he said.
The mayor told Sun.Star Cebu that John Venth, 21, has been discharged from the Chong Hua Hospital after being treated for second-degree burns.
He said his son will need to get some bed rest so the burns on both his legs can heal.
