New year, new council: Rama-A A +A
Tuesday, December 31, 2013
WITH the new year just around the bend, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama yesterday asked the City Council to start supporting his programs and projects next year.
“Bag-ong tuig, bag-ong konseho. Di na magsige’g babag kundi motabang para sa kaayohan sa katawhan (New year, new council. To cease intervention and instead help for the good of the people),” the mayor said in his speech during the City Government’s commemoration of the 117th death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal yesterday.
Rama issued the pronouncement more than a week after the City Council reduced his proposed P10.8-billion budget for 2014 to only 5.89 billion.
This, since the legislative body did not agree with the over P5 billion in potential revenues for the sale of the South Road Properties (SRP).
But while he is against the slashing, the mayor said he will no longer veto the P5.89-billion budget the council approved.
Majority of the members of the legislative body are members of the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan headed by former south district congressman Tomas Osmeña, who is Rama’s political nemesis.
The council had explained the budget cut, saying they only based it on City Hall’s “realizable” income for next year.
Aside from asking a more supportive council, Rama yesterday asked City Hall employees to serve the public honestly and not to accept bribes.
“If we want to bring significance to what Rizal did for us and for our country, let us all bring change, let us bring new things for tomorrow’s glory,” he added.
During yesterday’s activity, Rama and other officials led City Hall department heads, employees, barangay officials, Knights of Rizal, Knights of Columbus, Cebu City Police Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Muslim community among others in paying tribute to Rizal in the annual wreath laying at his monument adjacent to the legislative building.
The commemoration started with a mass at 8 a.m. and was followed by the offering of flowers.
