A BARANGAY councilor died while his neighbor was wounded after they were shot by two men on a motorcycle in Barangay Polog, Consolacion, Cebu late Thursday afternoon.
Rey Balaba, 50, died from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. A bullet grazed Henry Capao’s abdomen.
PO3 Arthur Ariate, investigator of Consolacion Police Station, said the attack took place around 5:40 p.m., while Balaba, Capao and Pedrito Padayugdug were talking outside Balaba’s house.
A red Honda Wave motorcycle with a “for registration” plate suddenly stopped near them. The passenger disembarked and opened fire.
Padayugdug was able to scramble to safety.
The victims were rushed to the North General Hospital in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City.
Balaba, however, died at 10 p.m. Capao received first-aid treatment for his wounds.
At the crime scene, police recovered six empty shells and four slugs believed to be from a .45 pistol. These will be brought to the PNP Regional Crime Laboratory Office 7 for a ballistic examination.
Capao and Padayugdug said the attackers had small built and covered their face with a shirt.
Ariate, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said they’re looking at two motives for the shooting: politics or personal grudge.
“Dili sad malikayan basin naa’y nasuko ani niya (Maybe someone got angry at Balaba),” the police investigator said.
During the barangay elections last October, Balaba garnered the third most number of votes. He had been a barangay captain for three terms.
According to Balaba’s wife, her husband had a conflict with a relative but this was a long time ago.
Based on how the shooting was carried out, police believe the attackers are guns-for-hire.
They invited someone yesterday for questioning.
