A KOREAN national was arrested in a store inside a shopping mall in Cebu City yesterday afternoon after he was caught allegedly stealing an iPhone.

Chief Insp. Ryan Devaras, head of the Mabolo Police Station, identified the suspect as Moon Hyun Su, 25, who is currently staying in a hotel in Barangay Kasambagan.

The incident took place at 3 p.m. inside a branch of iStore, the authorized re-seller of Apple products, when the suspect allegedly took a display iPhone worth P35,000.

Devaras told Sun.Star Cebu that Su was caught by the mall’s security officers.

According to Devaras, it was not the first time the suspect stole an iPhone.

On Friday, Su bought a Macbook laptop in another iStore branch from another mall. On his way out, he allegedly took an iPhone.

The store management reported the incident to the Mabolo Police Station and started monitoring Su’s whereabouts.

“Tayming lang gyud kaayo kay nasakpan na siya (It was fortunate that he got caught this time),” Devaras said.

He said the suspect’s modus operandi is looking at the display smartphones, together with other visitors. If he sees the opportunity, Su would take gadget and quickly leave the store.

When interviewed by police, Su denied stealing the smartphone.

“Nasayop lang daw siya og kuha. Wa daw niya tuyua (He said it was just a mistake. He has no intention to steal it),” Devaras said, quoting Su.

A complaint of theft will be filed against Su tomorrow.
