POLICE Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Danilo Constantino ordered for an investigation on the death of a man in Balamban, Cebu, who was on his way to a drug rehabilitation center in Cebu City.
Jerome Bendebel, 42, was reportedly escorted by a policeman on his way to the city last Dec. 31.
But Bendebel died and bruises were found on his arms.
Constantino said he will have to verify the name of the policeman who accompanied Bendebel and what might have happened.
He said they already have the name of the policeman, who is reportedly assigned in the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
Constantino would not give the name of the policeman until it is verified.
He said that based on the reports he received, the policeman claimed he is assigned in the Police Regional Office 7 headquarters.
“We already talked with the management of the rehabilitation center and we are still trying to find out what happened,” Constantino said.
He said he also requested the help of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.
“Nag-wild kuno to siya, manuslok sa mata, tingali ug nadapatan (He reportedly went wild and poked someone in the eye. That’s why he was beaten up),” said SPO1 Ruth Violango of the Homicide Section.
A doctor told police that Bendebel had a blood clot in his brain. An autopsy was conducted but results have yet to be released.
Violango said the hospital management called them up at 3 a.m. on Jan. 1 after finding Bendebel’s bruises suspicious.
Since the incident happened in Balamban, Violango turned the case over to the Cebu Provincial Police Office.
Bendebel was allegedly accompanied by personnel of the rehabilitation center in Lahug, Cebu City on board a Gray Pajero with plate number YEG 160, said Violango.
