NEW winners emerged in yesterday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan.

This year’s competition saw the comeback of Abellana National High School after they were proclaimed grand prize winner in the secondary division.

In the elementary division, Banilad Elementary School won the top prize.

There were a total of 12 contingents who joined this year’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan--seven in the elementary level and five in the secondary level.

Abellana defeated four other contingents with their “Dance of Gratitude,” which thanked the Sto. Niño and the countries who helped the areas in the Visayas that were hit by typhoon Yolanda.

In their free interpretation dance routine, they used the flags of the different countries as props. They formed them into hands that extended help to typhoon survivors.

Abellana’s choreographer, Walter Betito, said he is happy his group, which is composed of 90 dancers and 300 props men, won first place, after finishing fourth last year.

Betito said their dance this year is supposed to be Sinulog-based, but when the typhoon happened, they shifted to free interpretation.

Betito said they had no problem with their presentation this year since their school supported them unlike in previous years. Abellana’s alumni association also helped, he said.

Betito said they are ready to start a winning streak in the annual competition.

Had Abellana won last year, Betito said, it would have been their grand slam win this
year.

As for Banilad, they defeated six other contingents in the elementary level, including the defending champion, Apas National High School.

They earned the top spot with their underwater world dance routine, fast movements,
upbeat music and colorful props.

The group of 967 dancers and 288 props men got the loudest applause.

Banilad’s choreographer Erwin Escorial considered their victory a sweet one as it was the first time for Banilad to win first place. Last year, they only finished second to Apas.

Other winners in the elementary level are Quiot Elementary School (5th place), Tisa II Elementary School (4th place), Alaska Elementary School (3rd place) and Talamban Elementary School (4th place).

The best in musicality and best in costume awards went to Banilad.

For the secondary level, other winners are the Ramon Duterte Night High School (5th place), Tejero Night High School (4th place), Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. National High School (3rd place) and Apas National High School (2nd place).

The best in costume award went to the Abellana National High School while the best in musicality award went to Apas National High School.

The first place winner in yesterday’s competition received P300,000 cash; P150,000 for the second place; P100,000 for the third place; P75,000 for the fourth place and P50,000 for the fifth place.

The winners for best costume and musicality awards received an additional P50,000.

The winners of yesterday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan automatically earn a slot at the Sinulog Grand Parade on Jan. 19.
