CEBU CITY -- Prepare for long walks and heavy traffic this weekend in this city. And consider leaving your car at home for those two days.

The Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) gave these reminders on Wednesday, as it fine-tuned preparations for the procession of the Señor Sto. Niño on Saturday and the Sinulog grand parade on Sunday.

“Dawaton nato nga fiesta man ni and we are expecting a lot of people to come here. So bugnaw-bugnawon lang pod nato atong mga huna-huna (Let’s accept the fact that a lot of people are coming for the fiesta. So, let’s keep our heads cool),” said Citom operations officer Joy Tumulak.

Major thoroughfares in the city will be closed for the two Sinulog activities.

For the procession that will start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the City will close Osmeña Blvd., particularly in front of the Basilica del Sto. Niño, N. Bacalso Ave. and V. Rama Ave.

For the grand parade on Sunday morning, the roads that will be closed are the New Imus Road, M.J. Cuenco Ave., Gen. Maxilom Ave., Fuente Osmeña, Osmeña Blvd., P. Del Rosario St. and N. Bacalso Ave., among others.

Tumulak told the public to plan their routes if they will be going out of their houses this weekend and to consider not using their vehicles, so as not to add to the heavy traffic.

He also said the temporary terminal the City will place in the South Road Properties (SRP) will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The terminal will have 60 public utility jeepneys issued with special permits by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. These can ferry passengers, particularly coming from southern Cebu, from the SRP to Compañia Maritima near City Hall.

Passengers will have to pay P7.

Aside from jeepneys, there will also be buses, mini-vans and vans that will be at the terminal to ferry passengers from SRP to southern Cebu.

In a related development, Tumulak warned sidewalk vendors and vehicle owners that Citom, together with the City’s Probe and Gasa teams, will hold a clearing operation on Saturday on the procession and grand parade routes.

Vehicles parked along the routes will be towed by Citom, while the stalls of sidewalk vendors will be moved by Gasa and Probe.
