“I’VE ALWAYS dreamt of dancing for the Sto. Niño,” said Christine Jael Abellanosa, a third year tourism student.
“This is a dream come true,” said the 19-year-old lead dancer of Tuburan, Cebu’s Tribu Tinubdan sa Kauswagan, who was crowned Sinulog Festival Queen 2014.
She bested 10 other contestants during the coronation night last Friday.
Abellanosa, who is studying at the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in Cavite province, also bagged most of the corporate and major awards, which were announced after the group and solo performances at the jam-packed Cebu City Sports Center.
The Tuburan native was named Best Solo Performer and Best in Festival Costume.
Her white, pearl-adorned costume, designed by Roy Erwin Tizon, was adjudged Best Festival Costume.
Her team, whose performance was choreographed by Fernando Cabrillas, also won Best in Group Production and Best in Instrumentation.
Pauline Amelinckx, 18, of Placer, Masbate’s Tribu Himag-ulaw, won first-runner up. Her team, whose fairyland-inspired presentation drew the loudest cheers from the audience, was also adjudged Best in Group Performance.
Other winners were Jaya Lozano, 18, of Carcar City (second runner-up); Luvina Joy Bullanday, 22, of Panglao, Bohol (third runner-up); and Charise Claire Lachinebre, 15, of Barangay Talamban, Cebu City (fourth runner-up).
Abellanosa took home P50,000, among other prizes. She amassed four corporate awards: Medicard’s Miss Congeniality, Miss Devant, Miss Casino Femme, and Miss PLDT.
Amelinckx, who tripped during her solo performance, won three corporate awards: Miss Phoenix Petroleum and Miss Sun Cellular and Miss Allphones Philippines.
Maria Janica Zuño, 20, the lead dancer of Tangub City’s Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe, was named Miss Photogenic and Miss MyPhone Sinulog.
Other contestants who won special awards were Carcar City’s Lozano (Miss Lecit-E); Emie Jane Lagahit of Lanao Del Norte (Miss Mirinda Fun Mix); Panglao’s Bullanday (Miss Ever Bilena); Mitcherrie Donna Bulang of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental (Miss McSmile); and Talamban’s Lachinebre (Ms. 2Go Travel).
The judges during the pageant night were Miss Tourism International 2013-14 Angeli Dione Gomez, PLDT community relations head Evelyn del Rosario, lawyer Nadia Jurani, Mr. International fourth runner-up Gil Wagas, fashion designer Dino Lloren, Cinemalaya Foundation
president Nestor Jardin and Cultural Center of the Philippines artistic director Cris Millado.
Abellanosa, a first-time performer in the Sinulog, said she made sacrifices, including missing classes, to prepare for the competition. But all of the sacrifices, she said, were worth it.
“I’m happy I got the title, but that’s not important for me,” she said. “The most important thing is I was able to offer a dance to the Sto. Niño.”
