11 flights, 30 boat trips cancelled

AT LEAST 11 flights at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and 30 trips at Cebu ports were canceled yesterday due to bad weather brought by typhoon Agaton in Mindanao.

Mactan Airport General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete said PAL Express canceled two flights in its Cebu-Cagayan de Oro-Cebu route, one in the Cebu-Ozamis-Cebu route and another one in the Cebu-Butuan-Cebu route.

Cebu Pacific canceled its three flights in the Cebu-Cagayan de Oro-Cebu route, one in Cebu-Butuan-Cebu route, one in the Cebu-Surigao-Cebu, and another one in the Cebu-Davao-Cebu route.

Villarete said Air Asia Zest canceled its Cebu-Cagayan de Oro-Cebu route.

Villarete said some of the affected passengers preferred to stay and wait overnight at the airport, especially the transients. Most passengers went home.

At Cebu ports, the Cebu Coast Guard Station reported that some shipping companies voluntarily canceled their trips affecting about 762 passengers.

Rain

After a week of continuous rain in the Mindanao region, the number of reported fatalities has climbed to 40 while affected population rose to around 130 thousand families, said the National disaster Risk Reduction Management (NDRRMC).

The NDRRMC said Agaton, has already taken 40 lives. From a total of 123,444 families affected, around 34,000 vacated their homes and transferred to evacuation centers.

The bad weather, which has been staying in the region for more than a week now, caused landslides, flashfloods, heavy flooding and maritime incident in the provinces in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) implemented yesterday its Oplan Sinulog to assist revelers to reach the Sinulog parade route and get back home.

LTFRB 7 Director Ahmed Cuizon said private vehicles, buses and minibuses from Cebu South were made to stop and park at areas in South Road Properties (SRP) designated by Cebu City Traffic Operations and Management. EOB/Sunnex
