IS the town of Consolacion ready to become a city?

Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado said the town’s population is close to the minimum required for cityhood but she has to consult her constituents.

She said that during the general assembly of the League of Municipalities in the Philippines (LMP) Cebu Chapter yesterday, Rep. Gabriel Luis "Luigi" Quisumbing (Cebu, Sixth District) expressed his continued support to the move to make Consolacion a city.

Alegado said she finds the possibility tempting. She said the town’s population will almost qualify for cityhood status but she still has to check the municipal income.

To be a city, a town’s income must be at least P100 million to P150 million.

The mayor said that while becoming a city would mean getting a bigger Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share, cityhood status also has its disadvantages, such as higher business and real property taxes.

Alegado said she does not only need to consult her constituents, she also has to ask the mayors in the sixth district: Cordova and Mandaue City.

Last year, Sen. Loren Legarda said she will support the move to convert Consolacion into a city once Quisumbing files it.

Quisumbing said he is looking at the legal issues pertaining to Consolacion’s cityhood status.
