DID the children who discovered the “talking Sto. Niño” on a beach in Sitio Saac Dos, Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City lie?

Based on his investigation, Fr. Benjie Balsamo said their statements are questionable.

Balsamo is the parish priest of the Sto. Niño de Cebu parish in the barangay, where the image is being visited by many devotees.

Due to the results of Balsamo’s investigation, an official of the Archdiocese of Cebu urged devotees to not immediately believe in alleged miracles.

In a TV Patrol Central Visayas report yesterday, Balsamo said one of the kids reportedly lied when he said the image talked to them when they found it.

During their interview, one of the children also admitted lying about the “talking Sto. Niño.”

Be consistent

Balsamo said he plans to bring the results of his investigation to the office of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

In a separate interview, Msgr. Esteban Binghay said people who witness miracles must be consistent with their statements.

“Just like the children who saw the apparition of the Lady of Fatima. They were consistent with their statements despite the threats they received,” Binghay told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Binghay, one of the Cebu Archdiocese’s episcopal vicars, advised the faithful not to immediately believe in things that they consider miraculous.

“Not all unusual things are considered miracles. It has to be subjected to rigorous investigation because it is a matter of faith,” he said.

He said one sign that a miraculous image or object is authentic is if the witness or witnesses and the community living where the miracle happened are converted.
