Friends, family mourn loss of ‘songbirds’

OCCASIONALLY, they would hum a sweet and soft melody at home, or they would sing a chorus or two of a song in the company of friends in school.

To their family and friends, high school students Judy Ann Lomera, 18, and Joanne Marie Romero, 16, were songbirds.

But their young voices will be missed, especially on their graduation dayscheduled next month, after they were killed in a road accident last Thursday.

While happily singing and walking home from school, a car crashed and flipped on a bridge in Barangay Poblacion, Boljoon.

Lomera, Romero and their best friend Cristy Marie Estella, 18, got hit and thrown off the bridge due to the impact. Three second year high school students were also hit. Some of them fell off the bridge.

Daisy Villarta, the fourth-year class adviser, said Lomera and Romero were members of the school choir. “They had a really good voice,” she told Sun.Star Cebu.

On a recent caroling contest in Boljoon, the group placed second. In their free time, the two students also served the church by singing psalms.

Though Lomera was passionate about singing, her mother Gemma, 48, said she kept her daughter from joining contests so she can focus on her studies.

Judy Ann, the youngest in a brood of three, had planned on going to college. Her parents have saved money for her schooling.

One of her friends passed out after learning of Lomero’s death since they were supposed to practice a song a day after the accident.

As for Romero, she grew up with her aunt after her parents broke up. Her father, who is a police officer assigned in Manila, supports them.

Her aunt Belinda, 58, told Sun.Star Cebu that Romero got her talent from her mother, who reportedly works as a professional singer.

“She had a bright future ahead of her. She had the voice and the looks, she could be a good singer,” Belinda said.

As of yesterday, the condition of 14-year-old Melissa Mendez, one of the three students who survived the accident, improved.

Her brother Jimar, 19, said Melissa would undergo operation today to fix her broken arm. Two of Melissa’s classmates also remain confined.

The police will file today a complaint of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries against the driver, medical representative Al Dhinier Hadjul Sanaani.
