SPO2 Fernan Romero’s duty for 11 years in the Caloocan Police Station is to investigate traffic incidents.

Last Thursday afternoon, he said he received news that he wishes he himself could investigate: his daughter Joanne Marie Romero, 16, was killed along with two other girls in a traffic incident in Boljoon, Cebu.

But he could not.

“Hustisya lang amo ani (We only want justice),” he said. “Di mi makig-settle (We won’t settle the case). Di mi moatras ug mosukol mi ani (We will not back down and we will fight).”

Romero said he is on his way to his aim, after Al-Dhinier Hadjula Sanaani—the driver who hit and killed Joanne, Judy Ann Lomera, 18, and Cristy Marie Estella, 18—will face trial after he was charged by Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

The girls who survived were Nice Ancheta, 15; Melissa Mendez, 14, and her cousin Kynth Marie Mendez, 14.

Boljoon Police Chief Dexter Basirgo said that Mendez is in critical condition.

Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Rustom Presas Jr. resolved to file the reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide complaint against Sanaani in court, after the latter opted not to file a counter-affidavit during inquest proceeding yesterday afternoon.

Bail was set at P30,000 for Sanaani, who was taken by the police to the provincial prosecutor’s office.

Basirgo said they will file the information of the case in Regional Trial Court Branch 26 in Argao today.

A separate complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple serious injury will also be filed today against Sanaani, who did not issue any statement to reporters.

His lawyer also declined to be interviewed.

Basirgo said Sanaani is still confined in a private hospital in Cebu City.

Lomera’s cousin, Joy, said they will not settle the case with the suspect.

“Madahan, kinabuhi iyang gikuha (Can’t be, he took a life),” she said.

Lomera, the youngest of three siblings, went to school in Boljoon because her father is working in a poultry.

Joy said her cousin dreamed of becoming a teacher someday.

“Gusto niya mo-eskuyla og college. Daghan ta tog pangandoy (She wanted to go to college. She has dreams),” she said. “Di lang kinabuhi iyang gikuha asta mga pangandoy (He (Sanaani) did not only take a life but dreams also).”
