THE Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral now has a new parish priest after a reshuffle earlier this month.
Msgr. Ruben Labajo, former parish priest of the St. Joseph Parish in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City, has been appointed as the new parish priest of the ecclesiastical seat of the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Labajo replaced Msgr. Roberto Alesna, who is now the parish priest of the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.
In an interview yesterday, Labajo said priests assigned in parishes have a term of three to six years before they are transferred.
Alesna, who was formally installed in Lahug’s parish last Wednesday, replaced Msgr. Adelito Abella as its parish priest. Abella is the current head of the Archdiocese’s Chancery.
In an interview with Sun.Star Superbalita yesterday, Alesna said he plans to do everything he can to improve the parish.
Alesna said he left behind some unfinished projects in the Cathedral, including the repairs after the damage during the M7.2 earthquake last year.
Alesna, a native of Carcar City, is the seventh child of Eldephonso Alesna and Severiana Fernandez. He was ordained priest on March 17, 1974.
Before becoming the parish priest of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish, Alesna was also the former parish priest of the Santo Rosario Parish and the Alliance of Two Hearts Parish in Barangay Guadalupe.
Back in 1996, Alesna was appointed as monsignor by then Archbishop of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
He is also one of the Archdiocese’s four vicar generals and is an episcopal vicar of the Metro Cebu North parishes.
Alesna also served as secretary-general of the Archdiocesan Presbyterial Council and one of the associate judges of the Archdiocesan Matrimonial Court of First Instance.
