THE People Power Revolution took place at Edsa 28 years ago, but its impact continues to be felt today.
Delia Pronte, 68, retired teacher, felt nostalgic when she learned that an Edsa commemoration would be held in Cebu.
She said she wanted to share her Edsa memories with today’s generation.
“I want them to know and feel the struggle we felt at that time,” she said.
Yesterday, Pronte was among those who gathered for the “Salabungan,” a reenactment of the meeting in Edsa of key military and political leaders opposed to Marcos.
“We were in euphoria when we learned that then President Ferdinand Marcos stepped down from Malacañang,” Pronte said.
Pronte said she helped rallyists in Cebu by giving them snacks.
“I got involved because it was the right thing to do. Wala kay gamit sa kalibutan kon di ka makialam (You are worthless if you don’t get involved),” she told Sun.Star Cebu.
Pronte said she wants the new generation to appreciate the freedom they enjoy now.
In yesterday’s “Salubongan,” some spectators positioned near the stage to have a look at actor Dingdong Dantes, who played as former President Fidel V. Ramos.
“Wala ko nianha para motanaw og artista. Makita ra man na sila sa TV (I am not here for an actor),” she said.
Rein Solidad, 17, was not born yet when Edsa happened, but she said it taught her the
importance of fighting for her rights.
The college student from Zamboanga said her grandparents had told her about the struggle for freedom that time.
Solidad, who is taking up Tourism in Cebu Normal University, said she went to Capitol with her friends to witness a historical event.
“Napaiyak nga ako. Sabi ko, ‘Lord tingnan mo, nagkakaisa kami kahit ano pa ang mangyari (I cried. I said, ‘Lord, look at us, we are united despite everything),’” she said.
She said if not for Edsa, her generation could have been suffering now.
“We’re thankful for the millions of Filipinos who joined the revolution because it was also for our benefit,” she said.
