‘Relocate port, build bridge’-A A +A
Friday, February 28, 2014
CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama wants the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) to transfer the international and domestic ports in the City to pave the way for the plan to build a third bridge and to decongest the area.
“This is about time and it has been long talked about, the port has to be relocated,” Rama told reporters.
Rama sees the need to disperse the traffic of people coming in and out of the City everyday. He also hopes that CPA was able to observe that the port area is already congested of vessels.
“Traffic of people is already inevitable,” Rama said.
Talks have been done before and Rama is looking at either Consolacion or Liloan as the area for the new ports. The are now ship yards in the two towns.
The works for the third bridge will also be easier since there will be lesser vessels passing through the proposed area.
Rama plans to build the bridge linking Cebu City to Cordova and will pass through Shell Island.
If the plan to transfer the ports pushes through, Rama suggested that the CPA should use the old area as docking area for the big vessels, such as cruise ships that will bring in tourists.
To recall, several plans and suggestions to have the seaport relocated was also presented.
Rama’s suggestion to transfer the seaports came after he shared with the newly-appointed US Ambassador to the Philippines, Philip Goldberg, the plan to build the new bridge.
Goldberg made a courtesy visit to Rama last Wednesday.
He also insisted that the proposed third bridge should be in Cebu City.
“I hope they will all be thinking that Cebu City is a hub,” Rama added.
Rama also shared several projects, which include the on-going works to rebuild the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).
The Mayor said he hopes Goldberg can visit the patients of CCMC currently housed in the headquarters of the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) so he could see the situation himself.
