WITH reports of dynamite fishing happening in the seas of Mactan Island, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) Chief Rey Lyndon Lawas said he will meet with police officials in Bohol Province to establish coordination to stop the illegal activities.

LLCPO personnel earlier met with fishermen in the island-barangay of Caubian, where some residents claimed they can hear about 50 explosions from the seas every day.

Given the proximity of Mactan and Bohol, Lawas said fishermen doing dynamite fishing in the area may come from both islands.

“This problem needs to be addressed by both Bohol and Lapu-Lapu,” Lawas told reporters last Wednesday, during the signing of a covenant to preserve corals and other underwater resources at the Maribago Public Beach.

Volunteers

To step up its campaign against illegal fishing, the City Government held a seminar for members of Task Force Kalikasan in the barangays last month.

Each of the 30 barangays has five volunteer members of the task force and two fish wardens, who were selected by the barangay captain.

The two-day seminar refreshed the volunteers on their roles and tasks, which include reporting illegal fishing activities taking place in their area to the police.

City Task Force Kalikasan coordinator Andy Berame said the barangays play a big role in stopping dynamite fishing and other harmful fishing activities.

“The barangays are the front liners in law enforcement,” he said, adding the City’s task force cannot monitor the seas alone.

Dynamite fishing is banned in the country because it kills tiny fish and destroys corals. (RSB)
