MAJORITY of mayors in Metro Cebu support the proposal to create the Metro Cebu Development Authority (MCDA).
Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño, however, said the MCDA has more chances of becoming politicized than the existing Metro Cebu Development Coordinating Board (MCDCB).
Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura and Minglanilla Mayor Elanito Peña support the proposal but stressed the importance of local autonomy, particularly on the aspect of traffic management and identifying projects.
Other local government executives who are in favor of the MCDA are: Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy, Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito Durano III, Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes and City of Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong.
Four Cebuano congressmen—Reps. Raul del Mar (Cebu City north district), Joseph "Ace" Durano (Cebu, fifth district), Gerald Anthony Gullas Jr. (Cebu, first district) and Rodrigo Abellanosa (Cebu City south district)—earlier said they will file a resolution converting MCDCB into the MCDA.
Sitoy said he will support the proposal as long as local government units in the Mega Cebu 2050 vision will be represented in the MCDA.
Mega Cebu is a private-sector initiative that promotes cooperation among seven cities and six towns to achieve sustainable development. It involves the cities of Cebu, Carcar, Danao, Lapu-lapu, Mandaue, Naga, Talisay and the towns of Compostela, Cordova, Liloan, Minglanilla and San Fernando.
Sitoy said that through MCDA, he hopes that a bridge will be build will be built between Cordova, on Shell Island, and Cebu City.
Durano, on the other hand, said a coordinating body is needed to address many issues in Metro Cebu, like traffic, waste disposal and sewerage.
De los Reyes said Talisay City Hall needs the MCDA for its traffic management.
