‘Caloy’ heads toward south Cebu

SOUTHERN Cebu was placed under storm signal number one yesterday afternoon, as tropical depression Caloy hovered 310 kilometers northeast of Davao City and 170 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Places under the storm signal can expect winds with a strength of 30-60 kilometers per hour, within 36 hours.

According to Pagasa’s 5 p.m. weather bulletin, Caloy has maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and was moving northwest at 15 kph. Pagasa stands for the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The tropical depression was expected to be 90 kilometers west of Butuan City this afternoon and 220 kilometers northwest of Dipolog City by tomorrow afternoon.

By Monday afternoon, Caloy is expected to be 100 kilometers northwest of Puerto Princesa City.

Apart from southern Cebu, storm signal number one was also raised in Southern Leyte, Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Davai del Norte, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.

Pagasa warned residents in low-lying and mountainous areas to be alert against flashfloods and landslides, with moderate to heavy rain forecast in the affected areas.

Rainfall amount was estimated at between five and 15 millimeters per hour in areas within the 300-kilometer diameter of the tropical depression.

Pagasa advised local disaster risk reduction and management councils to take appropriate measures.
