REGISTERED nurse Theresa Amorina thought her life was over when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.
She was 34 years old when doctors found a benign lump in one of her breasts in January 2008.
"The doctors instructed me to have the lump removed but I decided to have it after summer,” Amorina told Sun.Star Cebu.
In April of the same year, she was shocked when doctors told her that the lump had become malignant.
Now 42, Amorina said she is proud of having survived not only cancer but also other challenges, including being separated from her first husband.
Amorina shared her ordeal and triumph during the Lihok Pilipina Foundation’s Sharing on Women’s Experiences on Resilience forum last Tuesday. The forum is one of the group’s activities to mark Women’s Month.
Amorina said she considered her illness as a blessing in disguise because it made her faith in God stronger. She also discovered people who truly cared for her.
A member of the Cebu Cancer Fight Inc., Amorina uses her experience as a cancer survivor to help other people. “I believe that in helping people, there is healing,” she added.
Amorina urged the public to switch to a healthy lifestyle.
She advised cancer patients not to be afraid. She said cancer patients will learn that there are many people who care and are willing to help.
Despite losing a breast to mastectomy, Amorina said she is not embarrassed to wear a swimsuit.
