TWO alleged sex slaves were rescued inside the rented home of a 71-year-old American national in Barangay Pooc, Talisay City yesterday afternoon.

Operatives of the Talisay City Police Office led by Supt. Reycel Carmelo Dayon rescued Mira, 52, and Jamilla, 28, inside the house of Larry Pendarvis at 5 p.m. yesterday. (Mira and Jamilla are not their real names.)

Relatives of one of the women claimed that Pendarvis would drug the women before having sex with them or abusing them inside his rented house in Rainbow Beach in Barangay Pooc.

But Pendarvis, in a separate interview, denied the allegations.

“Absolutely not true (that they are sex slaves). I don’t like slavery. Slavery is immoral,” Pendarvis told reporters.

In an interview, Mira told reporters that she had met Pendarvis through an online chat service in January last year. They eventually met offline when Pendarvis came to Cebu last August.

Mira, who is a contractual worker for a local government unit in Cebu, said that over the next months, she noticed Pendarvis would often find other women.

She added that she also invited other women to have sex with Pendarvis, in exchange for money.

Mira alleged that like her, Jamilla met Pendarvis through an online chat service, but this was already in December. Jamilla, a former overseas Filipino worker, reportedly came to Cebu from Surigao del Norte this year to meet with Pendarvis, who had allegedly promised he would marry her.

What happened was more complicated.

Mira told reporters yesterday that Pendarvis would often inject her and Jamilla with an illegal substance before having his way with them.

She also claimed that Pendarvis beat her whenever he was angry and that last Saturday, he attempted to strangle her with a laptop cord. She showed some marks on her neck.

Mira’s daughter, 24, was the one who reported the matter to the police after her mother failed to come home or report for work for a couple of days.

The daughter said that last week, she went to her mother’s workplace to look for her, but Mira’s colleagues revealed she had not gone to work since the Saturday before.

When she found out where her mother had went, the daughter immediately went to Talisay City and tried to get her. She found her mother apparently drugged, with no underwear on.

When she attempted to rescue her mother, the daughter said, Pendarvis would force her back into the house.

It was only when the police came in that Mira, along with Jamilla, were rescued and Pendarvis, arrested.

But in a separate interview, Pendarvis, who hails from Florida, denied the allegations that he had turned the two women into sex slaves.

He said he never forced himself on them or abused them.

Pendarvis is currently detained at the Talisay City Police Station, pending the filing of charges against them.

In an interview with reporters, Supt. Dayon said the police initially plan to file charges of illegal detention and violence against women and children against Pendarvis.

Dayon also plans to subject both women to a drug test.

He added the police found two laptops, a tablet computer, pornographic DVDs and magazines, and different types of non-prescription medicines in the man’s possession.

Dayon said he plans to have the laptops checked for any photos or videos of the women.
