FORMER Cebu City South District Congressman Tomas Osmeña is cancer-free, results of his latest medical check up by his US physicians say so.

A paid advertisement published in Sun.Star Superbalita yesterday showed Osmeña with the letter he received from his doctor.

The letter informed him of his latest health condition after a recent visit to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

“It was a pleasure seeing you at your visit to MD Anderson Cancer Center. You appear to be in excellent features at the time of your surgery in April 2009, and have no evidence of recurrence to date,” the letter of Dr. Arlene Siefker-Radtke, Associate Professor of the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology read.

Cured

The doctor said Osmeña has been five years out and essentially cured of cancer.

After a series of tests, Osmeña was diagnosed to have stage IV malignant tumor in his urinary bladder in October 2008 upon his medical check-up in Chong Hua Hospital. He was Cebu City mayor then.

Before the diagnosis, he complained of difficulty in urinating.

Surgery

In April 2009, Osmeña underwent surgery to remove his urinary bladder, his prostate and 40 lymph nodes.

After the surgery, the former Congressman went back every three months to the US for check-up. Years after, the doctors allowed him to undergo his medical check up every six months until it became once a year recently.

His doctor also informed him that chances of the recurrence of his cancer is low and is only less than 15 percent.

Osmeña said the MD Anderson Cancer Center is a reliable clinic, which has expertise in treating cancers.

Every year, the clinic treats some 22,000 new patients diagnosed of cancer. The MD Anderson Cancer Center also studies cancer cases.
