FOR helping save a pharmacist who was trapped for more than eight hours under a pile of debris last Oct. 15 in Loon, Bohol, a police official received an award for heroism from President Benigno Aquino III.
Senior Insp. Jacinto Mandal was among the 38 policemen in the country who received recognition yesterday during the “Araw ng Parangal sa Kapulisan” in Camp Crame for their exemplary work during calamities, armed conflict, and in the campaigns against illegal drugs, insurgents and terrorists.
Mandal received the Medalya ng Kadakilaan for helping save 23-year-old pharmacist Shirley Bongay during a 7.2-magnitude earthquake whose epicenter was in Sagbayan, Bohol.
The 40-year-old Loon Municipal Police chief was the only awardee from Central Visayas.
Mandal helped Bongay’s relatives dig out the pharmacist amid several aftershocks.
Bongay’s right arm was pinned by a concrete column of a house, which collapsed during the earthquake. While other rescuers drilled at the concrete structure, Mandal made Bongay drink pain reliever tables.
Bongay was freed after more than eight hours, but she lost her right arm.
Mandal held the rank of police officer 2 when he was assigned as homicide investigator of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) in 2000. He was promoted in 2008 to the rank of inspector.
In December 2012, he rose to the rank of senior inspector and appointed head of the LLCPO operations division.
He was appointed Loon police chief on July 22, 2013. About five months after Mandal assumed the post, the Loon Police captured Bohol’s public enemy number 2.
