RESIDENTS of remote towns in Cebu Province may no longer need to come to Cebu City whenever they need to see a me
dical specialist.

This, as Cebu Provincial Board (PB) Member Grecilda Sanchez proposed that Gov. Hilario Davide III sign consultancy contracts with specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and internal medicine, as well as general surgeons.

The medical specialists and surgeons would be assigned to district hospitals in the province.

The proposed resolution, which will be taken up by the PB on Monday, is in line with Davide’s goal to turn provincial and district hospitals into Level 1 facilities that are able to perform major surgery.

By doing so, the Capitol hopes to decongest the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) on B. Rodriguez St., Cebu City.

District and provincial hospitals lack equipment and medical specialists so residents needing serious treatment have to travel to Cebu City.

In her proposed resolution, Sanchez cited Republic Act 4226, also known as the Hospital License Act, and Department of Health Administrative Order 2012-0012, which require Level 1 hospitals to have medical specialists.

Sanchez said the number of doctors to be hired will depend on the budget of the Province.

She said the move would save many lives.

The Capitol stopped the practice of contracting a third party to provide doctors and medical personnel for the 16 district hospitals in the province. At present, doctors and nurses for the hospitals have direct contracts with the Capitol.
