TWO persons who are allegedly involved in making counterfeit bills were monitored by the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 in Cebu City.

Supt. Paul Labra, RID chief, said one of the two makes the fake bills while the other sells them.

Labra did not say where the suspects came from to protect their investigation.

He said police conduct seminars for financial establishments on how to detect fake bills.

Labra said the suspects distribute fake bills usually during holidays and summer, when people are going on vacations.

“Dapat i-check gyud na kung ang isukli sa imo dili ba fake (You should check if your change is not fake),” said Labra.

Cashiers and store owners should also know how to detect fake money.
He said they coordinate with the Central Bank about the seminars.

He said banking institutions, through the Cebu Bankers Club, are cooperative with the police in the campaign.

Based on the Bangko Sentral guidelines, genuine bills are those that have optical variable ink (OVI), which is an anti-counterfeiting measure, used on many major modern banknotes.

Colors

The colors of the OVI change when the bill is tilted.

The paper of genuine peso bills do not glow under ultraviolet light and the texture of the paper is rough.

The genuine bills also have tiny but clearly printed and readable words “Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas” or “Central Bank of the Philippines” on the face or back of the note.

Last year, the Cebu City Police Office arrested alleged counterfeit manufacturer Richard Uy in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

Police confiscated P800,000 worth of P1,000 bills that were ready for delivery and fake US$100 that were being printed. The bills were sold from P90 to P250 each.
