THE Cebu City Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (LDRRMC) is on full alert as Pagasa forecast a low pressure area to affect the country this week.

This means all personnel of the LDRRMC and other emergency response units of the Cebu City Government will have to work during the Holy Week.

City Councilor Dave Tumulak said all concerned offices are monitoring the weather and are prepared to respond to emergencies.

The LDRRMC was also on full alert for tropical depression Domeng, which affected the country last week. The City reverted to normal status only after Domeng has weakened to a low pressure area.

Kelly Torregosa, weather observer of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan, said Domeng brought rain to Metro Cebu late last week.

Rain

Torregosa said that a low pressure area was spotted about 125 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar around 4 p.m. yesterday.

Pagasa expects isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening, in the whole country.

The Philippine Coast Guard Cebu did not cancel boat trips yesterday despite cloudy skies and isolated rainshowers.

Cebu Commander Rodolfo Villajuan said the seas were moderate, not rough. But shipping companies may opt to cancel their trips if they think it is too risky, he said.

Even though the city only experienced light to moderate rains last week, Tumulak said the LDRRMC will continue to monitor coastal and upland areas that are landslide-prone.

He said some groups observe Holy Week in the uplands.

He said the rain may have loosened the soil, which increases the risk of landslides.

Pagasa also forecast another weather disturbance, which might enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday or Easter Sunday.

Tumulak advised barangays to implement preemptive evacuation if the situation demands.
He urged the public to be prepared and to remain vigilant.
