FOLLOWING the arrest of a man in possession of fake bills, the City Intelligence Branch (CIB) of the Cebu City Police Office is monitoring Barangay Calamba for possible manufacturers of counterfeit money.

“Not only in Barangay Calamba but there are also other areas in Cebu City known to be manufacturing counterfeit bills. We will check on it,” said CIB Chief Romeo Santander in an interview with the media yesterday.

Last Saturday dawn, Allan Cabrera of Barangay Calamba was arrested in Barangay Pahina Central after buying vegetables in the market allegedly using fake bills.

He was caught in possession of six P1,000 bills believed to be fake and another P100 bill.

Cabrera admitted buying the fake P1,000 bills at P200 each from his neighbor.

He was arrested by barangay tanods after a vendor asked for assistance.

Barangay tanod Nemesio Rupinta, in an interview, said Cabrera has been arrested in the past for the same offense.

He said several vendors fell victims to counterfeit bills but never pinned down a suspect until last Saturday.

He offered the possibility that groups previously arrested for this modus are operating again.

The CIB chief added that their main target is the counterfeit bill manufacturer, since the spread of fake bills will stop once the maker will be arrested and the machinery will be confiscated.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) earlier provided tips on how to detect fake bills from genuine ones.

According to the BSP, genuine bills are those that have optical variable ink (OVI), which is an anti-counterfeiting measure, used on many major modern banknotes.

The colors of the OVI change when the bill is tilted.

The paper of genuine peso bills does not glow under ultraviolet light and the texture of the paper is rough.

The genuine bills also have tiny but clearly printed and readable words “Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas” or “Central Bank of the Philippines” on the face or back of the note.
