TWO inmates, including the suspect in the fatal shooting of three people during a bank robbery in Daanbantayan, Cebu, escaped from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Medellin early Thursday morning.

Supt. Bartolome Sagadal, officer-in-charge of BJMP 7, identified the escapees as Berly Tudtud, 29, of Barangay Bungtod, Bogo City, and his accomplice Roger Lagahit, 25, of Barangay Talisay, Daanbantayan.

Tudtud, a former security guard, was charged with killing three people, including his co-workers, after robbing Fairbank last January.
Lagahit was charged with attempted murder.

Sagadal told Sun.Star Cebu the inmates bolted the jail at 6:30 a.m. with the help of a coconut lumber that they propped up against the four-meter perimeter fence.

“Ilang gipasandig og mao ilang gitungtungan (They then climbed on the lumber to get on top of the fence),” the jail official said.

Some residents nearby saw the escape, and reported it to jail personnel.

Tudtud and Lagahit were missing during the head count.

At large

A follow-up operation was immediately conducted, but the two inmates remained at large as of press time yesterday.

Jail personnel went to the inmates’ hometowns but they were not there.

Sagadal, in a phone interview, said Insp. Leonilo Gimenez, the jail warden of BJMP Medellin, has been relieved.

“He was forced to leave so he can focus on arresting the escapees,” he said.
A team from BJMP 7 was also sent to investigate what happened.

Gimenez may be sanctioned for command responsibility where the immediate superior can
be held liable for any infraction and wrongful act committed by his men.

Sagadal said they are coordinating with police, particularly in the northern towns of
Medellin and Daanbantayan and Bogo City, to help find the escapees.

The Medellin Municipal Government, through its Facebook account, warned residents of Barangays Curva, Tindog, Panugnawan, Dalingding and Canhabagat to be on the lookout for Tudtud and Lagahit and to report to authorities if they spot the two men.

Suspicious-looking

“Kining duha puros mga samaran gumikan sa ilang pagagi sa koral nga barbed wire ug may mamatikdan kamu nga tao nga wa ninyu ilhi ug may mga samad sa bukton ipahibaw dayun sa mga autoridad (Report any suspicious-looking persons who are injured),” the social
networking account said.

Medellin Mayor Ricky Ramirez, together with his squad, also established a perimeter around the sugarcane fields last Thursday where the inmates were believed to be hiding.

Police arrested Tudtud last Jan. 5 in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

He was accused of killing accounting clerk Jennelyn Migabon, 26; security guard Dean Deserto, 26; and Deserto’s girlfriend Cecilia Torres, 30, on New Year’s Eve.

The victims died from gunshot wounds in the head.

He also allegedly fled with P80,000 cash that was inside a steel cabinet in the bank.
