SOME barangay officials in different villages in Cebu City want to ask the City Government to increase the monthly cash incentives they have been receiving from the City.
The City released yesterday the first-quarter cash incentives to 800 officials in the 80 barangays.
It had set aside P7.2 million for the cash aid, which covers the monthly allowances of the barangay officials for January to March.
Each barangay captain got P15,000 (P5,000 per month) while barangay councilors each received P9,000 (P3,000 per month). Barangay secretaries and treasurers also got their P6,000 (P2,000 per month) allowances.
Buhisan Barangay Captain Glemar Barete said additional incentives will be used to help his constituents.
Including hospital bill payments, medicines and rice, among others, some form of help has been extended to constituents in Buhisan by barangay officials, almost every day, Barete said.
“Though the City has a program on hospitalization and medicines, there are still those who will come and visit us at the Barangay Hall to ask for financial help, particularly during emergency situations,” he said.
Part of his incentives, Barete said, will also answer some solicitations for fiesta celebrations and summer sports leagues held in different sitios.
Barete also expressed he is in favor of the planned increase in their allowances since it will mean the chance to offer more help.
“No barangay official will go against it,” he added.
Barangay Councilors’ League of the Philippines (BCLP) Cebu City Vice President Carlitos Ceniza said they initiated a formal request to the City for an increase, but it will be up to Mayor Michael Rama to decide. Ceniza serves as a councilman of Barangay Kalunasan.
Mayor Rama has said he remains open to the idea of granting the increase and will review the proposal.
“There is a possibility of increasing, but we also have to look at the whole landscape,” Rama told Sun.Star Cebu.
During the distribution yesterday, Rama reminded the barangay officials of the purpose of the incentives, emphasizing that they should show constituents what public service means. (RVC)
