A PRIVATE Japanese firm will conduct a six-month project research in Cebu City in a bid to formulate a comprehensive program to manage electronic wastes (e-wastes) in the City.

Japan-based Nippon Magnetic Dressing Co. Ltd. will partner with the City of Kitakyushu in Japan, Cebu Common Treatment Facility Inc., Cebu E-Resource Recovery Inc. and SM Prime Holdings Inc. to conduct the study.

The pilot project involves the collection of used and discarded mobile phones and other e-wastes from SM City Cebu and from the pilot barangays in the city.

The e-wastes will be shipped to Kitakyushu City for processing by Nippon.

The Cebu City Council authorized Mayor Michael Rama to join the Japanese firm and local partners in undertaking the study.

In a resolution, Councilor Nida Cabrera, chairperson of the committee on environment, said the City intends to manage its e-wastes, considered hazardous to the environment.

Republic Act 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990 regulates hazardous wastes and provides guidelines for their proper disposal.

Hazardous wastes include by-products, side-products and consumer discards that contain toxic substances.

Cabrera cited studies indicating that households, commercial establishments and institutions continue to dump e-wastes.

People who dispose of e-wastes are usually without protection and have little awareness of the risks posed by e-wastes, she said.

Nippon representatives are expected in Cebu on May 12 for the signing of the memorandum of agreement with the City Government.
