THE Cebu City Government received another proposal for a mass transport system.

Austrian company Dopplemayr Garaventa Group proposed to establish a cable car system in urban and mountain barangays in Cebu City to address traffic congestion in major thoroughfares.

“With Doppelmayr, customers get top quality in modern design, user-friendly solutions and optimum service,” read a letter from Doppelmayr area manager for Asia Pacific Norbert Federstein to the City Council.

Federstein said Doppelmayr installed about 14,400 systems in more than 88 countries.

Federstein asked the City Council for an opportunity to present Doppelmayr’s plans for Cebu.

According to its website, Doppelmayr installs several kinds of transport systems that include funicular railways, aerial trams and gondola lifts. Its funicular railway systems can be found in China and Malaysia.

The Cebu City Council set an executive session with Doppelmayr representatives on May 21.

But Mayor Michael Rama said he has reservations about using cable cars as alternative mode of mass transport because some people are afraid of heights.

He said cable cars may be more appropriate for recreation facilities.

Last month, Maglev Vision Corp. proposed an elevated multi-function monorail system to solve the city's traffic problem.
