GRADE 9 public school teachers in Cebu are undergoing training in the new K-12 Basic Education Curriculum at the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Basak campus, in preparation for the opening of classes next month.

In a press conference yesterday, Dr. Carmelita Dulangon, Department of Education (DepEd) 7 director, told reporters they expect more than 6,651 public school teachers in 19 school divisions in the region to undergo the training.

Dulangon said that in Cebu, 3,819 public school teachers are taking part in the training that began last May 12 until 21.

They come from different learning areas like Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao, 372 teachers; Math, 591; Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health, 502; Pilipino, 520; Araling Panlipunan, 498; English, 597; and Science, 624.

They are joined by 115 trainers from the USJ-R and DepEd.

Public school teachers in Negros Oriental, Bohol and Siquijor are also undergoing training.

Dulangon said the new basic education curriculum for Grade 9 will introduce a “learner-centered and conceptualized learning” in dealing with students.

Help available

Aside from being lecture-oriented, the new curriculum will gear students to learn things that can be used in real-life situations, she said.

“Through the new curriculum, students will be responsible for their own learning,” she said.

Dulangon said they will implement the new curriculum during the opening of classes on June 2.

She said she expects problems to arise, but these are part of the learning process.

Dulangon said if teachers encounter problems with the new curriculum, their agency has trainers that can help them.
