MCWD to open new wells, raise supply in July-A A +A

THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) yesterday assured consumers it is undertaking measures to address the decrease in water supply due to El Niño.
Rebecca Husayan, MCWD production division chief, said that one of these measures is to establish additional groundwater wells. She said four to five wells, which will produce 7,200 cubic meters (cu. m.) a day, will become operational starting July to September.
The additional supply will address the decrease in production of the Buhisan Dam, whose yield dropped to 2,800 cu. m. a day from a peak of 8,000 cu. m. before the onset of the dry period.
Husayan said MCWD also expects about 18,000 cu. m. from Luyang River in Carmen in July through a bulk water supply agreement with the Cebu Manila Water Development Inc.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration forecast a drought caused by El Niño starting June. It will affect surface water sources like dams.
But Husayan said this is not a cause for alarm. Still, she urged consumers to store water in containers and conserve the resource.
“They (consumers) may not enjoy 24-hour water service pero di gyud na sila mazerohan (but there will still be supply),” she said.
She urged consumers to be understanding.
Husayan also said MCWD can deliver water through trucks to consumers in elevated areas.
In another development, MCWD will send some technical personnel to Japan to undergo training on how to operate and process a mobile syphon tank (MST).
The Japan International Cooperation Agency brought an MST to Daanbantayan, Cebu to provide potable water to typhoon Yolanda survivors. The equipment can filter sand and gravel, and treat water to make it potable.
The equipment was pulled out of Daanbantayan in January and given to MCWD. It is housed at MCWD's Water Quality Control Division facilty in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City.
Husayan said the MST costs P14 to P20 million.
