THREE barangay employees, including two female barangay health workers (BHW), tested positive for using illegal drugs during a surprise drug test the Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (Cosap) conducted in three barangays.

Some 3,000 barangay officials and workers went through the surprise tests since Cosap started its operation this year.

About 101 workers from 30 barangays have been caught using the illegal drugs.

Last Friday, the Cosap conducted a surprise drug test in three upland barangays.

Two BHW’s in Barangay Babag and one driver from Barangay Guba were found to have been using illegal drugs.

Budlaan

Cosap also went back to Barangay Budlaan to conduct the surprise tests to two more employees who were not able to submit themselves to the test last week after they were reportedly sick during the schedule.

The two tested negative, which made Barangay Budlaan a drug-free workplace. Cosap also gave Barangay Guba a drug-free seal.

In Barangay Malubog, 56 barangay officials and workers also submitted themselves to the test.

Although everyone passed, Cosap Chief Alice Utlang said her office cannot declare the barangay drug-free after four workers who were supposed to undergo the test did not show up.

Cosap, though, will go back to the barangay to continue the testing.

Drug-free

Six barangays, including Pulangbato, Talamban, Taptap, Agsungot, Buhisan and Budlaan, were already given drug-free seals.

Utlang said they aim to finish the series of tests by June.

“By next month, we hope to finish the drug testing in all the barangays so we can focus on our information campaign against drugs,” Utlang told Sun.Star Cebu.

She, however, warned the barangays that Cosap will not stop conducting surprise drug test.

Aside from the barangays, Cosap will also conduct surprise and random drug testing to the different offices of the city.
