TWO men were arrested, one for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl, in separate police operations last Saturday. The other is a wanted person.
In Cordova, Cebu, a 48-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly molested a ten-year-old girl in Barangay Mahayahay, Cordova Cebu.
Maria (name withheld) is living together with her aunt after her parents broke up years ago.
Maria lives with her aunt and the latter’s live-in partner, both now her legal guardians.
When she joined the household, her stepfather, Melencio Asinto, allegedly started molesting her.
Last Saturday morning, Maria was allegedly seen by a neighbor crying. When asked, she told the neighbor that Asinto raped her. The neighbor promptly told Maria’s aunt.
Sr. Insp. Alexander Nuñez, chief of the Cordova Police, said the rape allegedly happened on Thursday when Maria, along with her aunt, and Asinto were sleeping in the same room. The suspect allegedly raped her while the aunt was sleeping.
Nuñez said Asinto reportedly threatened the victim if she speaks about the incident.
“Gihudlat man kuno siya nga dunggabon siya unya kay bata lagi nahadlok tawn (He reportedly threatened to stab her, so the child was scared),” Nuñez said in a phone interview, adding that this was not the first time that Asinto molested the girl.
The police are still gathering information on the alleged earlier incidents of rape.
Maria reportedly told her aunt because she was afraid of Asinto’s threat.
Asinto was arrested in their house in Barangay Mahayahay last Saturday noon.
Nuñez said the victim was taken to the pink room of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for medical examination.
Nuñez said the girl’s guardian is willing to file rape charges against Asinto, who is now detained at the Cordova police.
In a separate incident, after almost four years of hiding from the authorities, the eighth most wanted person in the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO’s) list was arrested last Saturday in Barangay Lahug.
Patrick Daclison, 25, is wanted for a case of murder that he reportedly committed four years ago.
Supt. Romeo Santander, CIB chief, said that since the campaign against wanted persons started, they have placed informants near the various homes of the wanted person lists.
“Though the wanted persons are no longer in their residence, we placed informants there since the suspects can’t avoid going home,” explained Santander in a phone interview with Sun.Star Cebu.
Daclison, from Bukidnon, reportedly went back to Cebu City. He reportedly arrived a week ago, and their informant then reported Daclison’s presence.
At 4 p.m. last Saturday, armed with a warrant of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 14 Judge Raphael Yrastorza Sr., CIB operatives led by SPO1 Raymond Supatan went to Barangay Lahug for the suspect’s arrest.
Daclison has a bounty on his head of P150,000, according to Santander.
Daclison’s arrest is a result of the CIB’s campaign against wanted persons and strengthening of its intelligence network around the city.
A few months ago, the Cebu City Police Office distributed foldable fans, bookmarks, leaflets, streamers and posters containing the names and faces of the city’s most wanted persons and police hotlines.
The campaign drew positive reactions from the public and the CIB has been receiving calls and messages reporting the whereabouts of the wanted persons on the list. The CIB arrested at least six most wanted persons and 160 wanted persons from Jan. 1 up to May 17, 2014.
