Sunday, June 8, 2014
A FIRE gutted 10 houses and damaged two others in a congested neighborhood in Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City yesterday afternoon.
No one was reported injured.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Mandaue City received a call for help a few minutes past 1 p.m. and stopped the fire from spreading after 34 minutes.
Firefighters from neighboring towns and cities responded to the fire after it was raised to Task Force Alpha. The flames were put out after an hour.
SFOI Julius Lloa, the fire investigator, said the fire started on the second floor of the house of Rosemarie Maluluy-on.
Cause of fire
“We are still investigating the cause of the fire,” Lloa said in a phone interview.
He pegged the cost of damage at about P200,000.
Lloa said the fire scene was located in a slightly interior portion of Alang-Alang, but still within the reach of the firetrucks’ water hoses.
Social workers from the City Social Welfare Services were in the process of identifying the affected families.
It was the third major fire to hit the city this year.
Last April 2, 42 houses went up in smoke when a fire hit Sitio Tondo, Barangay Tingub, displacing more than 90 families.
In Sitio Marfa, Barangay Bakilid, more than 100 families were displaced by a fire last April 28.
Both areas were placed under a state of calamity.
