AN Australian national has been confined in an intensive care unit of a private hospital after he was stabbed by an allegedly drug-crazed man in Barangay Luray II, Toledo City, Cebu on Friday night.

Stephen Mercer, 32, consultant of Galeo Mining and Equipment Company, suffered a stab wound in his nape.

His attacker, Jason Bermodes, 28, of Barangay Poblacion, Toledo, was arrested by police in a follow-up operation.

Chief Insp. Michael Anthony Bastes, head of Toledo City Police Station, said Mercer was having his dinner in a restaurant when the attack took place at 7:30 p.m.

Bermodes appeared out of nowhere and suddenly stabbed Mercer with a knife without provocation.

Bermodes fled after the incident. Mercer, on the other hand, was first taken to the Toledo City District Hospital, but was later transferred to the private hospital.

“Stable naman kuno siya pero bantayanan lang gihapon (He is reportedly in stable condition, but he is still under observation),” Bastes told Sun.Star Cebu.

Bastes said Bermodes have been to a rehabilitation center thrice. He also allegedly smokes marijuana.

Police are now preparing a complaint for frustrated murder against Bermodes, which will be filed before Toledo City Prosecutor’s Office tomorrow. (DSM)
