THE newly-crowned Miss Teen Earth Philippines, who hails from Mandaue City, vowed to help the City Government of Mandaue promote environmental awareness among the youth.
Vanessa Mae Walters, 14, who paid a courtesy call to Mayor Jonas Cortes at the City Hall last Tuesday, said she intends to visit schools to educate fellow students about the need to protect the environment.
The Filipino-Australian beauty won the first Miss Teen Earth Philippines pageant held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila last May 27.
“Education is the key,” said Walters in a press conference organized by the Mandaue City Public Information Office. “I will help educate the children to be more aware about the importance of protecting our environment.”
Walters, who grew up in Australia and moved to Cebu with her family two years ago, bested 19 other young ladies from different cities and towns across the country. Miss Teen Earth Philippines was her first national pageant.
Her success came less than a month after a Cebuano also bagged the Miss Earth Philippines title. Jamie Herrell, who represented Cebu City in the pageant, won the title last May 11.
Walters, who studies in an international school, said one problem that concerns her is the indiscriminate throwing of garbage.
“I’ve noticed littering on the streets. It’s really important to change the mindset of the people,” she said.
Van Bismark, organizer of the pageant and president of the Captured Dream Productions, said he organized the pageant to develop young “earth advocates.”
Bismark also organized the Little Miss Earth Philippines pageant, which was held simultaneously with the Miss Teen Earth Philippines pageant. (RSB)
