KAMAGAYAN Barangay Captain Raquel Avila led the annual distribution of school supplies, a project she initiated with a kin in 2003.

The number of beneficiaries this year has ballooned to 80 students.

Avila distributed the school supplies to some poor students of Barangay Kamagayan last Sunday afternoon.

Avila and the village councilmen distributed the school supplies to graders and high school students.

Each student received a bag, which contained a set of uniform, a pair of shoes, 10 notebooks, a ruler, a pair of scissors, crayons, papers, ballpens and pencils.

The beneficiaries are enrolled at the Zapatera Elementary School, City Central School and a school in Barangay Canduman, Cebu City.

Avila said the distribution is done yearly to help low-income families cope with the demands of school, particularly during the opening of classes where there are requirements to be bought.

Switzerland

While government officials distributed the school supplies, Avila explained that the project is a personal endeavor with her brother Abe Español, who lives in Switzerland.

Avila met with the parents of the students before the scheduled distribution for the fitting of the shoes and uniforms.

Annually, the Avilas also recognize sponsored students who graduated.

“We have to recognize their efforts to encourage them and other students to do well in school,” said Avila.
