PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III declared today a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City to give way to the City’s 53rd Charter Day celebration.

City officials will mark the celebration with a flag-raising ceremony in front of the City Hall at 7:30 a.m., which will be followed by a speech by Mayor Paz Radaza.

From being a municipality called Opon, Lapu-Lapu became a city on June 17, 1961 by virtue of Republic Act 3134. Former Cebu sixth district representative
Manuel Zosa sponsored the bill converting the municipality of Opon into a city named after Datu Lapu-Lapu, considered the first Filipino hero after he and his men defeated Spanish invaders in what has been called the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521.

Formerly a part of the sixth district, Lapu-Lapu City became a lone district in 2010, with former mayor Arturo Radaza as its first representative to the Congress.

During last year’s Charter Day celebration, the City gave recognition to a Japanese driver who uploaded a viral video clip showing a submarine ramming into a wall of corals in a popular diving site off Barangay Maribago.

The video taken by Satoshi Toyoda led to the suspension of an underwater tour for close to two months and to a stricter monitoring by the City of the activities in the Kontiki Drop, a popular destination for divers.

The City also honored an award-winning long-boarder (John Rex Tongco) and a visual artist (Lee Isabel Depiraine Taneo) who are both residents of Lapu-Lapu.
