Ched forms body to address teachers’ issues

AN OFFICIAL of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) central office assured college teachers who stand to be affected and displaced by the full implementation of the K to 12 program that they will not be left on their own.

Lawyer Lily Freida Milla, director of the International Affairs Services of Ched, said their agency formed a technical working group that is studying the implications of the K to 12 curriculum on higher education.

The group will come up with recommendations on how Ched and the higher education institutions (HEIs) should address the concerns that stemmed from the implementation of the longer basic education program.

Consultations with professors, HEIs, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Labor and Employment are also ongoing.

“We are still putting all of this into an action plan but at least be assured that the commission is studying it. The initial recommendation is we could take this as an opportunity for faculty development, training and tooling, especially for those in higher education,” Milla told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.

Milla was one of the guest speakers at the Asean Academic Summit held at the University of the Philippines Cebu.

She said that it’s not only the plight of teachers in HEIs whose subjects will no longer be taught in college that needs to be addressed.

How the K to 12 curriculum affects higher education and how Ched and the HEIs should prepare for it should also be tackled.

When senior high school consisting of grades 11 and 12 is implemented in 2016, Milla said that general education subjects taught in college in grades 11 and 12 instead.

The DepEd earlier said these subjects will include Filipino, Math, Science and
English.
As a result, college teachers handling general subjects stand to lose their current teaching positions.

Since more teachers will be needed to teach additional subjects in senior high school, Ched is preparing to facilitate faculty development programs for college teachers so they will be qualified for teaching positions in senior high school.

“That’s why on our part, although this has not been concretized, (our efforts) is really on massive faculty development and retooling and probably also for preparation if they plan to move to K12. Faculty development could be a program that could be considered, and Ched is in charge of it,” she added.
