Friday, June 20, 2014
UNITED Nations Industrial Development Organizations (UNIDO) representative Jan Dictus commended Cebu City’s programs on transportation and solid waste, while saying that the City has yet to identify strategies to attain its goals in 50 years.
Dictus said the City needs a comprehensive baseline study to face the challenges posed by its projects.
Dictus said City’s waste management program is effective, noting that the city is “mostly clean.”
Recycling, he said, is also effective, waste segregation seems to work and composition is well addressed.
All this help reduce pollution, he said.
He said, though, that the City needs to pay more attention to waste reduction.
Dictus said the City is lucky because of the low use of individual transport.
He commended the proposed Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) project.
Dictus said the City should not lose the public utility jeepneys (PUJ) since they are the most affordable public transport.
He said the City Government should have a vision on where it wants to be 50 years from now, and it should have a plan on how to get there.
Dictus said that for the City to have an idea of what’s happening around, it they should monitor the effectiveness of their activities and programs.
Dictus said the City needs to think creatively strategic to come up with good solutions to the its problems.
Dictus said he expects huge changes in Cebu City when he will visit it again after five years.
The Unido team will be in Penang Malaysia on Aug 25 to 29. (Zash del Pilar, USJ-R Mass Comm Intern)
