DANAO City Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano III yesterday said they used the P3-million prize that they received for its "Seal of Good Housekeeping" award in the concreting of a barangay road.

The award is given annually by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

This award was started by the late DILG secretary Jesse Robredo, who died in a plane crash two years ago.

A local government unit (LGU) will receive the award if it will pass the criteria on good governance set by DILG.

The criteria includes an LGU's good financial housekeeping, disaster preparedness and social protection.

Danao City has the lowest water rate in the country at P5 per cubic meter, the same rate the Durano patriarch set when he was mayor in 1988.

DILG 7 Director Ananias Villacorta announced that the Danao City Government has been conferred with the seal of good housekeeping and awarded the amount of P3 million.

Vision

Durano expressed elation and gratitude to the DILG for the award, which reflects the concerted efforts of employees in the city to attain the vision of his administration.

He also vowed to work harder.

"Definitely, we will exert more effort to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the programs and services of the city," Nito said.

The Duranos have been managing Danao since the 1950s starting with the time of their patriarch, the late Ramon "Mano Amon" Durano Sr., who became Danao town mayor and congressman for seven terms.

Mano Amon was congressman the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared Martial Law on Sept. 21, 1972.

He died in 1988 as incumbent city mayor.

Congress

Since the ratification of the Constitution in 1987, the Durano family represented Cebu's fifth district starting with Nito from 1987 to 1998, Joseph Ace Durano from 1998 to 2003 and Ramon "Red" Durano VI from 2003 to 2013.

Ace went back to Congress after winning in the May 2013 elections.

Mano Amon's wife, Beatriz, became the first Danao City mayor.

Nito and his immediate family regularly face another set of Duranos during elections.

Recently, Durano created the City Mayor Management Staff composed of all city department and program heads for better coordination in the city's projects and programs.
