TALISAY City Mayor Johnny delos Reyes wants Talisay to be the first to put up a water park in Cebu.

Delos Reyes revealed that he plans to convert the city’s biggest river system, the Mananga River, into a tourist attraction.

In an interview with reporters, delos Reyes bared plans to turn the Mananga River into a water park and recreational area for tourists.

Rep. Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas (Cebu Province, 1st District) said that delos Reyes’s proposal must be studied first.

Based on his proposal, the four-meter mouth of the river will be dredged to allow seawater to merge with the river system.

In effect, it will become a larger body of water, which will be opened for recreational swimming, water sports and even ferry services.

Attractive

When that happens, delos Reyes will then develop the riverside to make it more attractive to tourists.

The idea was not taken out of thin air since it was based on how delos Reyes developed his own mountain resort in Barangay Gaas, Balamban, Cebu.

The first-time mayor said he will coordinate with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 regarding his proposal.

In a separate interview, Gullas explained that there is a need to study the proposal because of the unpredictable condition of the river.

There had been incidents of flash floods in the Mananga River during heavy rains.

Gullas emphasized that public safety should be the primordial consideration in delos Reyes’ proposal.

“I think there is need to determine if it’s feasible or not. If it’s feasible, then why not?”, said Gullas.

While both are from different ends of the political spectrum, Gullas believes that delos Reyes is doing his best to serve his constituents.

Gullas is the grandson of former congressman and Talisay City mayor Eduardo Gullas.

The older Gullas ran for mayor against delos Reyes but lost, which was among the surprising 2013 election results in Cebu.
